What is the difference between a Direct and Regular mutual fund plan?

Direct plans are purchased directly from the AMC with no broker commission, resulting in a lower expense ratio and slightly higher returns. Regular plans go through a distributor who earns a trail commission embedded in the expense ratio. Over long periods, the return gap becomes significant.
