What is the Sensex?

The S&P BSE Sensex is a free-float market-cap-weighted index tracking the performance of 30 financially sound and representative companies listed on the BSE. Launched in 1986 (base year 1978–79=100), it is the oldest and most widely tracked barometer of the Indian equity market.
