What is the Cost Inflation Index (CII)?

The CII is a government-notified index used to calculate the inflation-adjusted cost of long-term assets like property, gold, and certain bonds. Dividing the indexed cost by the sale price determines real capital gains. CBDT releases the CII annually; for FY 2023-24 it was 348.
