3-6 funds is optimal. More than 8 creates phantom diversification with massive stock overlap and no real risk reduction. A powerful core portfolio: 1 large-cap or index fund plus 1 mid-cap plus 1 flexi-cap plus 1 short-duration debt fund. Add small-cap and international only with 7+ year horizon.
