Is Home Insurance mandatory in India?

Home insurance is not legally mandatory in India (unlike motor TP insurance) but is strongly recommended. It covers the structure against natural disasters, fire, floods, earthquake, and the contents against theft. Premiums are very affordable (₹2,000–₹5,000/year for a ₹50 lakh cover) relative to the risk protected.
