What does 'Alpha' mean in mutual fund performance?

Alpha measures a fund's excess return compared to its benchmark index. An alpha of +2% means the fund delivered 2% more return than the Nifty 50 (or respective index). Consistently positive alpha signals skilled active fund management. An index fund by definition always has an alpha close to zero.
